Why Hashem?

An exploration of my interaction with religious authority.

From my grandparents’ wedding album

I was almost confirmed, at a catholic church in Long Island. I don’t remember which one. I think I knew from an early age i was different. Perhaps not queer, but different. I knew the church was not for me. My mother and father were deeply, culturally atheist. My Grandfather and Grandmother were brought up with Catholicism but did not pass it down to their children. Why, then, did I start going to synagogue of my own accord?
